Once registered, applicants may reserve a place at the College up to three years prior to entry, or at any point after this time as long as places are still available. In order to reserve a place at the school, we require a satisfactory school reference and an assurance from the Preparatory School head teacher that the pupil is likely to achieve a pass in the Common Entrance Examination at the level required to gain entry to the school. An overall mark of above 60% averaged over the seven core subjects is a safe pass, with a minimum requirement of 55% in English, Mathematics, Science and French. Where we have any doubts or concerns about an applicant being academically suitable for Epsom and who is seeking to reserve a place, then we will require the applicant to sit a pre-test. If successful, the applicant will be able to go on to sit Common Entrance, but if they do not pass the pre-test then the offer of a place may be withdrawn. In these circumstances the Confirmation Fee would be refunded.
Once we are assured of the academic suitability of the applicant, then an offer of a place is made. There will be a deadline to accept the offer, but requests to extend the deadline will always be considered, if space is available. A place cannot be confirmed until the Acceptance Form and deposit have been received.
Details regarding the Common Entrance curriculum together with sample papers are available from the Independent Schools Examination Board at http://www.iseb.co.uk/.
Entry to Epsom College for pupils who are not at Preparatory Schools is by way of the Epsom College Entrance Examination which is held in January of the year of entry.
A place may be reserved up to three years in advance of entry as long as we are reasonably confident that the applicant is likely to pass the Entrance Examination. To do this we will require a copy of the two most recent school reports and examination results and, in certain circumstances, we will also require a reference from the pupils' present school. If you do not wish to reserve a place at the College in advance of the Entrance Examination then your son or daughter will still be able to sit the test although, even if successful, we cannot guarantee that places will still be available at that time.
The Examination consists of English, Mathematics and Verbal- Reasoning Tests, as well as an informal interview. For those candidates who have been studying French, there is an oral examination which is used for setting purposes should a candidate be offered a place at the College.
The tests are designed to gauge pupils' academic potential and ability in the core areas of English and Mathematics. They require no special preparation, and are broadly based upon the National Curriculum specifications. The tests are not designed to reward hours of coaching, but if your son or daughter has never taken a Reasoning Paper before it may be sensible to practice one or two in order to be familiar with the format. In the same way, it is worth identifying any topics in English and Mathematics which your son or daughter finds difficult and practise some questions in these areas. Sample papers may be obtained from the Admissions Registrar.
