Carr House

Originally opened in 1883, Carr was named after one of the original supporters and benefactors of the College, Dr William Carr. The House is situated in the Newsom Building, an impressive, late Victorian, three storey, mansion-style building, just inside the main gates. It spreads over three floors and has wonderful views across College Lawn towards the main school buildings.

Carr House is home to some 70 boys, who have a range of facilities within the accommodation. There are two large brew rooms, both with pool tables and table football. There is also a TV room. Carr has a fully networked ICT room and the House is also connected to the College Intranet via Wi-Fi. The Housemaster lives with his family in the attached accommodation and there is also currently a resident tutor. The House is supported by five full time academic and pastoral tutors, a housekeeper and team of domestic staff.

Carr is a happy, thriving community with boys who have a very wide range of interests and abilities, whether that be academic, sport, drama, music or creative arts. All boys who come to Carr are encouraged and supported in developing their interests and making the most of the huge range of opportunities. Over the past few years, Carr has been successful in a good number of house competitions and has produced a number of School Captains and Heads of School. A great house for the all-rounder!

Carr House is run by Mike Day with the support and assistance of his wife Beth. They live in the House with their two children Charlie and Lily, dog Kasey and cats Boddington and Murphy. Mike has been Housemaster of Carr since 2001 and teaches Design Technology throughout all age groups in the school. He coaches U14 A rugby and referees at A team level across various age groups. He is Master in Charge of association football, running the 1st XI, has been Master in Charge of Sailing and is a qualified RYA Instructor. He also coaches some tennis and athletics and can be regularly found judging javelin at athletics fixtures. Mike also runs the highly popular Junior Ski trip.

Beth teaches EAL part time and runs the thriving Fashion Design and Textiles activity at the College. The House is very much considered to be home for all who enter it and a strong emphasis is placed on family values, mutual respect and good relationships.
