International Students

Epsom College welcomes applications from International Students for entry to years 9, 10 and 12.

Epsom has a long tradition of educating boys and girls from overseas and currently some 10 per cent of its students come from outside the UK. Pupils from Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Germany, Russia, Portugal, Korea, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic have all studied successfully at the College.

Epsom College offers first class provision for those pupils for whom English is an Additional Language. The five fully-qualified specialist teachers ensure that every pupil reaches the highest level of proficiency in all four language components: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The pupils follow the full curriculum including GCSE English Language and Literature with IGCSE English as an Additional Language as an option. In the 6th Form pupils are prepared for IELTS with TOEFL and SAT as options. The expectation is that all pupils will reach an advanced level of English, which will qualify them for acceptance in their chosen subject, by any university in the United Kingdom, (including Oxbridge), the USA and worldwide. Pupils are taught by a highly experienced team of teachers both in small groups in timetabled periods and in one-to-one tutorials.

Students are welcomed into one of the College's seven Boarding Houses, where they enjoy a good social and ethnic mix. They also have their own Boarding Coordinator to care for all their pastoral needs. Each Boarding House at Epsom has its own representative who attends meetings and puts forward ideas for entertainment or outside visits and trips on behalf of the international students. The House representative is also able to discuss any problems or specific issues that may arise.

On Saturday evenings during term time, the students can get together for social events and there are many opportunities to take part in activities and celebrations from their own culture, such as the Chinese Moon (Harvest) festival, the Oktoberfest and the Chinese New Year. This is complemented by a range of organised Sunday activities and trips.

Worship is at the centre of College life and spiritual awareness is encouraged as part of a student's development. A Muslim Imam and a Hindu Priest assist in the multi-faith approach at the College.

Epsom's extensive catering facilities allow for a varied diet and a number of cultural tastes are catered for.

The College is favoured with excellent road and rail connections, with Gatwick and Heathrow airports less than an hour away. Junctions 8 and 9 of the M25 are accessed easily in less than 15 minutes and central London is only 40 minutes by train.

International Student Profiles

My name is Natalie Tan and I am from Malaysia. This is my first year at the College as a boarder in Wilson House. I have two older brothers, one of whom attended Epsom College a few years ago. My family sent me to Epsom because of its international reputation and I am enjoying it here very much. There is so much to do that I never get bored; my life is always busy and interesting. There is a great atmosphere in the House - it's just like having a big extended family. Everyone is warm and friendly and I have many strong friendships. Mrs Tod, our Housemistress, is wonderful and helps us with everything. She organises trips and things for us to do in the House. Ice skating at Hampton Court at Christmas was memorable and cake making and tasting in the House is always fun! Academically Epsom is excellent, with so much support from motivated teachers. I especially enjoy Spanish, Art and Chemistry. The teachers make learning fun and I enjoy new challenges. Life at Epsom is very much a full-on schedule, with so many activities to choose from. I love playing tennis and am looking forward to the summer term when I can compete in matches against other schools. I keep in regular touch with my family and friends back home by email and talking to them is easy as all the Boarding Houses have Skype installed.

My name is Darren Tai and I come from Hong Kong. I am in the L6th form, having joined the College at 13. My older brother boarded here a few years ago after my family heard about Epsom's reputation for good teaching standards and boarding facilities in a nice environment. Being an overseas boarder can be challenging at first, but the organised trips and parties help you to widen your circle of friends and meet new people, I have fond memories of a visit to Thorpe Park, a local theme park. I really enjoy the sport at Epsom. I am captain of Fencing, which is played competitively over two terms. Fencing requires a lot of physical strength and agility, so I work out regularly in the College gym, doing weights and fitness training. I am currently studying for my AS exams in maths, economics, physics, chemistry and extended project. I also enjoy being part of the Young Enterprise group, learning about developing and managing a business and culminating in a recognised qualification at the end. I am hoping to continue to study in the UK and to read law at university.

My name is Annemarie Heijna and my family live in Saudi Arabia. My brother Thijs and I came to Epsom because my parents had heard about its reputation for high standards. I am in my first year boarding in Wilson House and Thijs is in his second year in Fayrer House. I am very happy boarding in Wilson as it is just like being at home with all your friends  around you. My life is very busy as there is always so much to do. At weekends and free time I can walk into Epsom town with my friends and go shopping or to the cinema. There are plenty of organised trips too and we can go to London easily on the train. I especially enjoyed a visit to the Houses of Parliament and a trip to Devil's Dyke near Brighton. I am a very keen horse rider and am looking forward to the 5th form when I can take up riding at the College. At the moment I am really enjoying my hockey and played in goal for my team last term. My favourite subjects are History, Art and Design Technology. All the teachers are great and make learning fun. For me, Epsom is special because everyone helps each other out - even prep in the evenings is enjoyable! If you have a problem or get stuck you can always ask your friends or the House tutors for help.

Guardianship

It is a condition of entry to Epsom College that all pupils living overseas have a nominated guardian who is resident in the UK. The guardian is the parents' representative in this country - essential in times of crisis or need for support and advice, and available not only to the pupil but also to the school as a proxy for the parents who might not be easily contactable.

The guardian's responsibilities normally include making all arrangements for somewhere to stay during Half Term, Exeat weekends and any shorter periods at the start and end of term if flights do not correspond with term dates. In addition, the guardian should be available during term time in the event of an emergency, medical or otherwise. Guardians of pupils having non-UK nationality will also be expected to ensure that pupils fulfill their Visa entry conditions on arrival in the UK.

We recommend that guardians meet the respective Housemaster/mistress when the pupil joins the school and that regular communication takes place thereafter in order to provide effective support for the pupil. Guardians are strongly encouraged to attend parents' evenings (usually one per year), and are also welcome at sports fixtures, concerts and recitals, drama productions and other House and College events. For this reason, the appointed guardian should live within a reasonable distance from the College such that travelling time should be no longer than two hours.

No international pupil will be admitted to the College unless a guardian has been appointed. Parents unable to find a suitable guardian may wish to engage the services of an accredited educational guardianship, and the College is happy to pass on details of guardianships with whom we have had a successful working partnership.
