In October 2010, a group of 12 L6th form History, Government and Politics students, accompanied by teacher Henry Meier, took part in the International Youth Conference organised by Lambeth Academy, the College's partner school under the Government's Academy Programme.
Over 100 students, including delegates from Blythe Bridge High School, North Oxfordshire Academy, Walthamstow Academy and Gemsamtschule Velbert, one of Lambeth Academy's overseas partner schools from the North Rhine/Wesfalia area of Germany, attended the conference, which is now in its fourth year.
The morning began with brief speeches by the Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Dr Neeraj Patil, who highlighted the importance of global understanding and respect for each other, and Southwark Councillor Columba Blango, who gave a synopsis of his life, stressing how anyone can achieve anything they want to. Councillor Blango was born in Sierra Leone, competed as a decathlete at the Moscow Olympics and became a teacher, before eventually entering British politics.
The attendees were then divided in ten groups, with at least one member from each school represented in each group, to debate the four topics of the day: multi-cultural societies; the importance of religion in the modern world; terrorism; and climate change. The College students were very involved in the discussions, many of them playing a lead role.
At the end of the day, each group had to present their findings to the conference and field questions from the audience. Max Austin, Angus Martin, Ben Grant, Oliver Dennis and Sophie Lundsberg-Nielsen were selected to speak on behalf of their respective groups.
"It was impressive to listen to the quality of the students' thought processes and ideas and it linked directly to what Lambeth Academy Principal Stephen Potter said at the start of the day, when he labelled all the young people in the hall as the ‘leaders of the future'," said Ennelyn Schmidt-Roberts, Assistant Principal, Community, and International Coordinator at Lambeth Academy.
