All pupils study Music in the M4 year. Taking into account their diverse musical backgrounds, the course combines creative and technical elements to enable a lifelong appreciation of music, provide a solid foundation for those studying the subject at GCSE and beyond, and stretching the most able to fully explore their talents.
The Edexcel courses are followed at GCSE, AS and A2, with their complementary study of the interdependent disciplines of performing, composing and understanding music. All these courses are open to those studying any instrument, or voice, and they are designed to accommodate performance of any repertoire.
Whilst not offered as a separate academic subject, Music Technology is integrated into the courses described above. All M4s are trained in using Sibelius score-writing software and the Music School houses a digital studio used for recording or as a tool for composition.
The academic programme is supported throughout the year by regular trips to orchestral concerts, operas and musicals, which are usually open to all pupils.
