Saying goodbye to the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House on the last day in Sydney
Our last day in Sydney and a hockey showdown with Barker College. While Barker certainly showed us a thing or two on the netball court yesterday, the girls were keen to prove themselves (and, of course, years of coaching!) on the hockey pitch.
But before the serious business of the day started, the party congregated at Barker College at 7.45 am for a morning of beach, sand and sun...although not not as much sun as we would have liked! We owed our beach tour to an overzealous bus driver, Gary, who cheerfully took us to the famed Home and Away set, otherwise known as Palm Beach.
The girls took photos, frolicked in the sand then hopped back on the bus for a whirlwind tour of the famous Bondi Beach, Australia's surfing centre. The breathtaking sights and clear skies made our last day in Sydney a memorable one.
Then it was into contemplative mode as we made our way back to Barker College for the hockey. Two teams: red and orange. Blue sky. Birds silent. Some distant chatter from a schoolchild who wasn't aware of the seriousness of today's matches. Hockey: What Epsom does best (Mr Drinkall might argue with Mrs D on that one - ed).
In the U17A game, what started as a fairly evenly matched contest was soon turned to Epsom's advantage by a goal from captain Tash Nichols. Assisted by some excellent offensive play by Caitlin Keep, Emma Albon and Tamsin Barber, Tash would go on to score a hat trick, matching her performance in the previous match against Ascham School.
With Tamsin Barber also matching her performance in the last game with a further two goals and the defence, anchored by goalkeeper Alice Davidson-Richards, once again keeping the opposition at bay, the final result was 5-0 to Epsom, making it three wins out of three for the U17As.
Not to be outdone, the U17B XI put in their best performance of the tour so far. Following even play in the first half and a 0-0 scoreline at half time, Camilla Green scored a brilliant goal in the second half to win the match for Epsom. Time seemed to stand still as she wound up and rocketed the ball into the net.
After tea in the Marks Pavilion, the girls were picked up by their hosts and hopefully will get an early night ready or tomorrow's 7.15 am transfer to Sydney Airport for the flight to Cairns on the next leg of the tour.
