IGCSE points the way forward

The College is delighted with some outstanding GCSE option results this year. Over 80% of candidates achieved A* or A grades in Art, Information Technology, German, Spanish and Physical Education.

There were many individual success stories for 5th form pupils. Star performers included Melody Man, who achieved 10 A*s and 2 A grades at GCSE/IGCSE as well as an A in an AS Maths module. Patrick Lewis was awarded 10 A*s at GCSE/IGCSE and also A grades in AS Maths and Critical Thinking modules, while Harriet Skan was delighted with her 9 A*s and 1 A at GCSE/IGCSE and an A in her AS Critical Thinking. George Lindley was also celebrating 9 A*s and 1 A at GCSE/IGCSE.

The College is very proud of its IGCSE results this year, with notable performances in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Information Technology. With an increasing number of independent schools electing to offer the alternative qualification, Epsom is delighted with the performance of students who have taken the more rigorous IGCSE exams.

"These demanding qualifications are an outstanding preparation for A level and it was impressive to see how many of our first cohort of IGCSE students, the leaving U6th, progressed from A*s at IGCSE in the 5th form to the coveted new A* grade in Science and Mathematics at A2," said Angela Drew, Deputy Head, Academic.

Starting in September, pupils in the U4 year group will be studying IGCSE English and English Literature in place of GCSE. The College's new Head of English, Jane Bathard-Smith, is confident that the IGCSE course will provide the perfect preparation for the highly successful Pre-U English course, which the College has pioneered alongside other leading independent schools.

"In addition to their academic achievements, I would also like to congratulate our students on their valuable input in all areas of College life, including sport, drama and community projects. I wish them the very best of success as they now move into the 6th form at Epsom to continue their studies," said Headmaster Stephen Borthwick.
