Consultant clinical radiologist Dr Chris George with members of the newly formed Medical Society
The newly formed Epsom College Medical Society was delighted to welcome Dr Chris George, consultant clinical radiologist at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals, as the guest speaker in the first of a planned regular series of lectures.
Dr George specialises in musculo-skeletal and sports medicine imaging and gastrointestinal, abdominal and urological imaging. He also conducts research into the imaging and staging of colorectal cancer.
Addressing students in the 5th, L6th and U6th forms, Dr George talked about how radiology is used in the diagnosis and treatment of various types of cancer. He described how a small polyp can develop into to a malignant cancerous tumour and how doctors use various different methods and techniques both to detect and either remove the cancerous growth or treat it with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
He then looked specifically at bowel cancer and the various different symptoms and methods of treatment, noting how easily it can be avoided by early detection and treatment as it is such a slow growing cancer.
His talk was followed by an energetic question and answer session covering a wide range of issues including those relating to university applications to read medicine.
The Medical Society was formed by L6th former Anna Halstead and meets every Thursday to debate issues relating to medicine and university applications. Every half term Anna is arranging for a leading speaker in the medical field to give a lecture to the Society.
