Success on the beach

The College girls' and boys' volleyball teams almost made it a win double at the National Independent Schools' Beach Volleyball Championships in Brighton last week, with the girls retaining the trophy they won at the inaugural tournament last year and the boys finishing runners up.

Hosted by Brighton College, the tournament was played in glorious weather on the Yellowave beach courts on the Brighton seafront. Teams were made up of four players rather than the usual two in beach volleyball and six in indoor volleyball to make the game more accessible to all squad members.

In the preliminary rounds, the Epsom girls beat Brighton College, Reed's, Farnborough B and Roedean, and suffered just one defeat to Lancing College, to win their group and move into the semi-final where they met Farnborough A.

Outstanding play against Farnborough by all six squad members - Vickie Shiu, Tiffany Yung, Koala Tang, Steph  Ng, Anka  Giese and Wendy Sun - saw them reach the final with a comfortable 34-16 win. The final, against Sevenoaks, proved a tighter affair, but the Epsom girls held their nerve to ease their way to a 29-24 victory.

Meanwhile, the Epsom boys team - made up of Chris Chau, Brian Choong, Kelvin Chung, Benjamin Choi, Alan Lau and Eric Lee - went through their group games undefeated with wins over Bedford, Reed's, St Bede's A and Sevenoaks and a draw against Brighton B.

In the semi-final they beat St Bede's B 33-20 before suffering their only defeat of the day in the final against Brighton A, going down 20-28.
