In the last OE fixture of the year the OEs beat the Common Room. A rather stronger OE side than normal saw Jon Collier and Rob Ganpatsingh starting in the last match and providing the first point trouncing Paul Williams and Ken Siviter by, in racing terms, "a distance". Alan Hagdrup and Colin Madgwick saw off Mike Day and Andy Wolstenholme 5 and 4. The only Common Room point came from Stuart Head and Paul Gillespie who defeated the OE Club President Paul Sievers and Tony Beadles. The final game was a halved match between Paul Starns and Paul Naysmith for the OEs and Peter Irvine and Richard Jones for the Common Room
Epsom, ably led by Paul Starns, stopped for lunch 3-1 down, with our only win in the morning coming from Rob Ganpatsingh and Neil Porter. However, suitably refreshed after lunch the OEs stormed back to obtain a halved match 4-4. Our afternoon points came from Rob Ganpatsingh and Gerald Dickman, Paul Starns and John Paulus, Chris Lammiman our Captain and Tom Williams.
This fixture has now been running for 37 years and for the first time in 8 years Epsom were victorious by 4 matches to 2, our points in the morning came from Chris Lammimam and Rob Lammimam whowon 6 and 5 and Richard Walton Gould and Tom Williams who won 7 and 6. In the afternoon our winners were Richard Haworth and Richard Walton Gould who won 3 and 2 and Chris Lammimam and Tom Williams who won 4 and 3.
The OEs managed to reverse the earlier season loss to the College by winning the return match 2 matches to 1. We welcomed 2 recent leavers to the OE team: Jeremy Morgan and Lewis Kuhler
J Morgan and L Kuhler 2 and 1 lost to Boote and Cullen 2 and 1
J Smallshaw and R Nunn beat Lucinda Taylor and Rachel Williams 3 and 2
G Crawford and T Williams beat Smith and Kuhler 6 and 4
As has been the pattern in recent years, Eastbourne won comfortably 4 to 1. Epsom's only win came from guest, Epsom master Peter Irvine, who because of a late withdrawal, had to play an Eastbourne pair on his own. Nevertheless, the match was enjoyable and we followed it with a supper in the Fowler Rooom at Walton Heath.
The House Cup
18 OEs assembled for the Annual Meeting on June 6th when Chris Lammiman was elected as our new Captain.
Former Headmaster Tony Beadles and the Hon Secretary of the Society combined well to retain the House Cup for Forest at Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club, with an impressive score of 35 points over 15 holes. In second place was Propert, represented by the Fisher brothers, Tom and Angus, with 30 points, just pipping Rosebery's John Reynolds and Colin Madgwick on the last 9 holes.

The Captain's Prize
Roger Nunn "The Vicar" (pictured), playing on a Sunday, recorded a hole in 1 at the 9th hole at Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club, using an 8 iron. This is the first time in 20 years the Hon Secretary can remember a hole in 1 at one of our meetings. Roger very kindly bought all a drink. However, his 34 points were not sufficient to win the Captain's Prize as John Reynolds, with 34 points, pipped him on the last 9 holes.

OEs 2 Epsom College 3
A very close game in our first match of the year against the College saw the OEs go down 3 matches to 2, losing both of the last two games on the Home Green. The two OE Halford Hewitt pairs won and have hopefully fired up the College golfers for their attempt at winning the HMC Schools Finals this year.
The OEs qualified in 4th place and with some of our stars away or unavailable, it was left to Angus Fisher and Alastair Wells to lead the way with 29 points. They were ably assisted by Richard Jennings and Adam Maurice with 28 points and John Reynolds and Steve Schindler who scored 27 points. So now to the finals in Norfolk later this year.
After the long cold winter, the weather for (Halford) Hewitt week in April was glorious. The practice day at Deal on Tuesday was almost without a breath of wind, followed by an exceptional meal at Royal St Georges GC with the Old Lerpoolian GS.
The following day OEGS played OLGS in a 4-ball match at Prince's GC and OEGS managed to regain the Nimmo/Boase Jug, played for every year on the Wednesday of the Hewitt at Prince's GC.
Thursday of the Hewitt is traditionally a first round day but there are a few teams who need to wait to play their first round on the Friday - this year OEGS had their first round on Friday and managed a "friendly" against Radley at Rye. Another glorious day and another OEGS victory put us in good spirits for the first round against Canford.
With two wins from the two strongest pairs, including a debut win for Gareth Blease, an unexpected loss from Richard Jennings and Adam Maurice saw the match poised at 2-1 with matches at 19 and 17 all square. The Felton brothers failed to covert from 4ft on both 17 and 18 and went down by 1 hole. Angus Fisher and Sam Baker made a great 4 at 19 for a half and then the opposition replied with a great 4 at the 20th. The 21st saw an unfortunate OEGS bogey to a par 5 and it was only the second loss in the first round for Epsom in the last 10 years.
The plate saw the OEGS lose in the second round to King's Canterbury. An unfortunate end to the week was made sorer when the Hewitt was won, most unexpectedly, by Clifton who were defeated 3-0 at the Brent Knoll Bowl two weeks previously. The story of the final (Clifton vs Charterhouse) will live in Hewitt folklore.
Epsom were drawn against Clifton in the 1st round of the 2010 Brent Knoll Bowl and managed to win 3 0. Steve Schindler and Gareth Blease winning a tight game at the top, Adam Maurice and Angus Fisher winning comfortably (thanks in part to some very good putting from Maurice) at 2nd pair and Jennings and Baker coming through to win 3&2 at bottom.
The Leatherjackets were our opponents in the 2nd round and although dry the wind had got up considerably in the afternoon, it played into the hands of the Leatherjackets who are all members and all pretty wily. Unfortunately Maurice and Fisher came up against some inspired golf and went down early, with Baker and Jennings appearing to have the edge over their opponents in the bottom match. The tie depended on Schindler and Blease at top playing against a seasoned pair of veterans. Having won a couple of holes back to be in with a chance at 2 down with 4 to play, it was not be and Epsom lost the top game 2&1, Baker and Jennings closed out their game with a birdie on the 18th for the consolation point. The team enjoyed a lively Saturday evening in Burnham.

OEs opened the 2010 season with a Halford Hewitt warm up match against Sherborne at Walton Heath, with the course rock hard and with a fine covering of snow. Sadly we did not win a match, the two halved matches coming from our only two pairs playing with a yellow coloured ball so as not to lose it in the snow! The trophy, an empty Methuselah champagne bottle that was consumed in Le Touquet in 2001 at our inaugural match, is now passed to Sherborne for safe keeping!
