Robinson House

Robinson House was founded in 1968 and is named after Dr. Henry Robinson, treasurer of the College between 1952 and 1960. The house is situated in the middle of the complex of five boys' houses that stretch from the Main Gate down beside College Road. Charles Conway has been Housemaster since 2002.

Robinson House - an appreciation

Based on the principle that normal is boring, the boys of Robinson House are unlike any other set of individuals in the whole school. Consecutive winners of the annual senior pancake race, pioneers in originality, boys are encouraged to be themselves and emphasis is placed on enjoying every moment they spend in the House environment.

Other Houses may boast of cups, trophies and unbeaten records. But what five years in this House taught me is that cups will rust and records will be broken, but friendship stands the test of time.

This House, more so than others, has a very strong sense of belonging, something that is present across all years. A great source of this comes from Housemaster Charles Conway, who takes great pride in the boys.

Something very noticeable is that he realises that Robinson is just a name and that it is the boys that make the House, every one of them, and that's not something that they have to compete for. This is most evident in Robinson's single biggest expenditure, the annual pizza party after the cross-country, which takes place regardless of performance.

To sum up Robinson in one word is impossible. Virtute non verbis, the house motto, literally translated means "by deeds and not words". We are who we are by what we do and what we do, we do together. There are precious few words that one can use to describe that.
