White House
White House is unique in that it is the only Sixth Form House in the College. Established in 1976 as a Boarding and Day House for Sixth Form girls, it was moved a few years later to its present location at the northern end of the terrace of what were originally alms houses overlooking the College lawns, where it continues to provide a home exclusively for girls entering the Sixth Form from other schools. The current Housemistress, Faith Smith, took over the running of the House in September 2015.
Faith attended Bristol University where she completed a BSc in Mathematics and also studied for her PGCE. Her teaching career started at Clifton College, where she spent seven years and was also an Assistant Housemistress.
After deciding to take a break from teaching, Faith completed a ski season in Meribel, followed by some travelling, before returning to the classroom to take up a post at Wellington College where she was an Assistant Housemistress and coached various sports, including netball, swimming, rounders and riding. She also set up and ran the showjumping and eventing teams at Wellington, taking them to national success in the Schools Finals and at Hickstead, and made use of her skiing experience to lead several recreational and competitive ski trips.
After six years at Wellington, Faith moved to Downe House and took up the position of Housemistress, before moving to Epsom.
White House provides a warm and supportive environment for girls who join Epsom College after taking their GCSE exams at other schools and who wish to experience boarding, co-education and becoming independent before they go to university. It is the Housemistress's aim to ensure that it is a place in which every girl can fulfil her potential, both inside and outside the classroom. Her main aim is to instill in the girls the principle of developing a sense of ownership of one's achievements and responsibilities, very much in the vein of developing life skills to succeed at university and ultimately in the world of work whilst balancing a fulfilled personal and social life. The girls are made to understand the purpose of the school's expectations and they are encouraged to fulfil those expectations in a mature and responsible way, thus developing emotional and practical intelligence. In this, she is supported by a dedicated team of boarding tutors and a matron.
