Raven House, founded in 1999, is named after Dame Kathleen Raven, an influential figure in the world of medicine and nursing and chairman of the College’s Council for many years. As a close friend of Dame Raven, who died in April 1999, Michael Portillo officially opened the house in the October of 1999. It occupies the building that had been Crawfurd House, onto which the new Humanities classroom block was built.
Its location, at the very heart of the teaching area of the College campus, is found by its members to be most convenient, as is its proximity to the school shop.
Housemistress, Sarah Williams, joined Epsom in 1987 as Teacher of Chemistry, and joined Raven as a House Tutor in 2013. Sarah was Acting Housemistress for two terms, before being appointed to the post full-time from September 2018.
Sarah attended the Perse School for Girls in Cambridge, and went on to read Natural Sciences (Chemistry) at Cambridge University, followed by PGCE training at Oxford. She met her husband Paul, at Epsom (Paul is Second Master at the College) and they have both been fully involved in the pastoral life of the College during their time at Epsom.
They have two sons – Thomas and Harry – who both attended Epsom. In her spare time Sarah enjoy swimming (She holds Blues from both Cambridge and Oxford), as well as walking, gardening, visiting National Trust properties, travelling, and looking after her blue Burmese cat, Saffi.
