Nine members of the Navy contingent of Epsom’s CCF have taken to the water this week, working towards their Level 1 Sailing qualification, across three afternoons of dinghy sailing.
Led by Lower Sixth student, Pan, the keen group headed out learning to rig, launch and helm dinghies in glorious weather on Tuesday afternoon.
Gentle winds made for a fun afternoon, sailing in pairs, especially when one capsized boat was quickly righted by the efforts of the cadets. Everyone learnt quickly and had a great time, and a quick jump into the reservoir made for a refreshing end to the hot day.
Wednesday brought the cadets more changeable conditions, but most keenly took on the challenge of solo sailing. There was some rain but it did not put off the group. Time out was taken onshore, so that the cadets could learn important theory while the thunderstorm rolled past. Even with the cooler weather, the traditional end-of-day dip continued, and everyone’s confidence remained high.
Congratulations to Year 10 cadets, Yasmin, Daniel, Tilly, Mehrad, Rebecca, Naiya, Harry and Andrew, and thanks to the group leader, Pan.
