Pupils Experience Life as Legal Eagles with Hudson McKenzie

Hudson McKenzie, a law firm specialising in immigration, have started to offer legal work experience to Epsom pupils. The first two to benefit file their report.

The first two successful applicants were Fifth Formers Arun Joshi and Annabel English. The next opportunity for pupils will be during February half-term, and will be advertised to our Fifth and Sixth Form pupils shortly. Annabel English reports on her experience.

“Hudson McKenzie offers a hybrid work experience opportunity; pupils spend two days participating in team meetings with members of the Hudson McKenzie team, and three days working in their Mayfair office from 10.30am-4.00pm. This experience is unique because interns get to complete fulfilling work for the solicitors, rather than simply shadowing them.

I got the opportunity to complete an IDV form for an individual’s visa application, find SOC codes for a Skilled Worker visa application, and complete payments for a Certificate of Sponsorship – this work has a genuine impact on people’s lives. Prior to this experience, I had no clue what an IDV form was, though now I can talk about different forms, certificates, and visas, and I could attempt to advise someone on the UK immigration process.

The office atmosphere was very casual, I had conversations with the employees, all extremely sociable and friendly, ranging from their pathway into this niche area of the legal industry, how AI is changing the legal industry, to their favourite local place for lunch. I would recommend this work experience, not just to gain an insight into the legal industry – specifically immigration and human rights law – but also as an enjoyable, and independent way to learn more about what life after study looks like.

I’d like to thank the Hudson McKenzie team for being so welcoming and providing a thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring week.”
