The College

Epsom College is a co-educational day and boarding school with approximately 1100 pupils aged 11-18. Founded in 1855 as the Royal Medical Benevolent Foundation, a strong science tradition is maintained, with a significant and growing proportion of leavers going on to study medicine or related disciplines.

The applicant must be organised and methodical in their approach, cheerful, well presented and work co-operatively within the department. A hands on, practical approach will be essential.

Each of the three science disciplines, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, runs independently of each other in separate buildings with their own technical staff. There is however a reasonable level of inter-departmental collaboration between teaching and technical staff. The Chemistry Department has 6 laboratories, together with stores, prep. room and staff areas, and there are 8 teachers supported by 2 Technicians and 1 Technician Assistant.

The technical support staff are responsible for: the preparation of class practicals, practicals for examinations, maintenance of equipment, consumables, administration of systems including the electronic requisitioning system, the general servicing of laboratories, and supporting teaching and learning in the department by discussing new practical work with relevant teaching staff.

The Assistant Technician is immediately responsible to the Senior Technician and Head of Department and ultimately to the Bursar, and they will be expected to work in co-operation with all members of the Chemistry Department.

Main Areas of Responsibility

• Clean and decontaminate glassware from practical work as requested by the Senior Chemistry Technician or teaching staff

• Undertake the general care and maintenance of glassware and other equipment as requested by the Senior Chemistry Technician or Head of Department

• Preparation Room: assist with the safe running of these areas and ensure that they are properly stocked

• Assist with the clearing of classroom practicals and setting up which may require manual handling/lifting

• Work with a clear understanding of health and safety with the classroom and laboratory environment.

• Assist with administrative task

• General assistance around the Chemistry Department and anything reasonably requested by a member of that Department or other science departments.

• Able to work on own initiative as well as being a proactive team player with a flexible approach

• Strong organisational skills and methodical methods of working.

Desirable qualifications/skills/experience

• Science or chemistry qualification

• Experience working within a laboratory or school prep room environment

• Familiarity with CLEAPSS and other safety organisation

Terms and Conditions

Hours

Term time up to 35 hours per week 9am – 4pm Monday – Friday term time including Inset days. Some flexibility of hours will be required in order to meet the needs of the pupils timetable, department examination, timetable and school events.

Salary

Total £15,710 per annum based on the above working hours FTE 57% (34 weeks per year plus Inset) which includes holiday pay entitlement pro rated for part time working.

Pension

The College operates the Epsom College Automatic Enrolment Scheme. The Scheme is administered by the Pensions Trust. Eligibility is based on statutory criteria. If eligible, the Employee will be required to contribute a minimum of 5% of Basic Salary and the College will contribute 4% in compliance with current legislation.
