Porter – Facilities Department

Epsom College is a co-educational day and boarding school with approximately 1100 pupils aged 11-18. The College is located approximately one mile from Epsom town, below Epsom Downs, in fine buildings set in a beautiful tree filled campus of some 72 acres. There are 13 Houses of which 6 are boarding houses and offers all pupils a wide academic and Co-Curricular programme.

Originally founded by The Royal Medical Benevolent Foundation, today the College strives to develop the individual talents of every girl and boy. Pupils are prepared for life beyond the College with an assured set of values and with the belief that they can make a difference in society. Highest standards of excellence in academic work and co-curricular activities are expected, but equally valued is the development of the pupils into independent responsible adults with a purpose and an understanding of the benefits of contributing to their community.

The Department

The Facilities department comprises Porters, Matrons, Housekeepers, Laundry, Domestic Assistants and Reception staff, who all report to the Facilities Manager. Working alongside the Facilities Manager is the Assistant Facilities Manager.

The Post

The function of this post is to assist in the provision of a high quality and efficient porter, car parking, cleaning, laundry and set-up service to the College.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Porter

  • To carry out any routine daily porter duties as required by the person responsible for the areas.
  • To ensure that all tasks within your area of responsibility are completed to the required standard.
  • To assist in moving furniture and carry out light maintenance duties within the campus as required.

Cleaning and Laundry

  • To ensure that daily/deep cleaning and floor maintenance tasks are carried out according to the work schedules and cleaning standards to the satisfaction of the line manager.
  • To assist in the laundry with collection, sorting, washing, drying, folding, ironing and distribution.

Car Parking

  • To ensure that appropriate signage is in place, enabling visitors and staff to park safely and in the correct locations.
  • To direct traffic and parking as necessary in a calm, professional manner, responding to any queries that may arise.

General

  • To assist in ensuring, through effective communication with the appropriate people, that any additional requests are carried out in accordance with the requirements of the individual or department concerned.
  • To be of smart appearance and appropriately dressed in the uniform provided.
  • To be aware of responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. To ensure adherence to relevant regulations. i.e. Fire Precautions, Manual Handling, C.O.S.H.H. etc.
  • To attend all mandatory and relevant training as required for the role.
  • To undertake duties in accordance with safeguarding procedures and protocols.
  • To adopt a flexible approach to the role and undertake any other reasonable task as requested. i.e. support security duties/lock up and internal/ external events. Occasionally you may be requested to support in the Sports Centre and the hours of working are 5am to 2pm.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working in a service environment.
  • Professional approach and customer focused.
  • Demonstrate a “can do” attitude and approach to duties.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Sense of humour, even temper and able to remain calm, patient and polite at all times.
  • Reliable, punctual and flexible.
  • Work well under pressure.
  • An appreciation and commitment to safeguarding protocols within a school environment.
  • Ability to self-supervise.

Desirable

  • Experience of having worked within a school environment.
  • Clean, full driving licence to be able to drive in the UK unaccompanied.

The selection panel reserves the right to enhance any or all of the desirable criteria to attain a manageable field.

Terms & Conditions

  • Salary: £25,707pa, reviewed annually and paid monthly in arrears on 25th of the month.
  • Hours: 40 hours per week. On a two-week rota working throughout the year as the business needs dictate. Staff are expected to work on Open Mornings and Founder’s Day (time off in lieu will be arranged for any additional hours worked) plus the first and last week of the summer holidays.

  • Holidays: The holiday entitlement is 28 days paid holiday per annum including bank holidays and increasing by 1 day per annum to a maximum of 33 days per annum including bank holiday entitlement.
  • Pension: The College operates the Epsom College Automatic Enrolment Scheme. The Scheme is administered by the Pensions Trust. Eligibility is based on statutory criteria. If eligible, the Employee will be required to contribute a minimum of 5% of Basic Salary and the College will contribute 4% in compliance with current legislation.

Offer of Post
