Drama | Epsom College

Drama holds a special place in the hearts of everyone at Epsom. Throughout the year – whether in academic lessons, co-curricular pursuits, House-based social events such as soirées and extravaganzas, or as an audience member – drama entertains, educates and enlightens. Our pupils take centre stage, or work wonders backstage, to ensure that drama remains one of the most cherished aspects of College life.

Showstoppers

We stage four major productions each year, which provide every pupil with the opportunity to audition for lead or ensemble roles. For those whose skills are best expressed backstage, production roles are plentiful – including stage managers, costume designers, sound technicians, lighting and special FX operators, props and set designers, or as a member of the House band.

These productions are large scale and lavish. Over 200 pupils are involved each year, and performances take place in front of sell-out audiences – including matinees for local schools.

Cultural Highlights

The development of skills, such as teamwork and time management, is a crucial part of the dramatic process, and we encourage this further through clubs and a programme of drama workshops, often involving visiting practitioners.

We regularly participate in the National Theatre New Views Scriptwriting programme and have an excellent record in LAMDA examinations (in Acting, Reading for Performance or Public Speaking).

Our pupils have taken roles in West End plays such as Moana, and on major TV dramas, including The Crown.

Clubs & Societies

Right from the start of Year 7, all the way to the Upper Sixth, there are clubs and societies that will deepen our pupils’ love for theatre and performance.

Aspiring stage technicians might want to sign up for Junior Tech Club, while those craving the limelight can take part in Lower School Drama Club (pictured). The clubs for younger pupils are often led or assisted by senior Drama Scholars, which helps to build confidence and fosters strong bonds between pupils of different ages and abilities.

There’s The College Players for our Year 9 thespians, or the Costume for Theatre and Stage Technology clubs for those yearning to put on a show. At whatever level, and in whatever capacity, pupils can help us to bring the house down year after year.
