An Epsom College Education

Help Support our Bursary Programme

Throughout Epsom’s history, and in keeping with our founding traditions of ‘Benevolence and Excellence’, the College has extended bursary provision to enable gifted and talented pupils to access an Epsom College education – and none more so than today.

There are currently over 100 pupils receiving some form of financial assistance. This can be anything from 10% to 110% of the school fees and we offer support to both day and boarding pupils.

A percentage of the bursarial funding comes from the College’s own endowments and investments, with the remainder funded through donations to the Development Department. The support of our community is so very generous and we are immensely grateful to all who support this fund.

We thank all who have donated, or are making regular gifts, either to the General Bursary Fund or in support of a particular pupil. Helping to fund a pupil through Epsom is truly altruistic. The gift of education is very special, changing not just the pupil’s future but also their family, with the impact continuing for many generations.

Regular gifts and one-off donations, both large and small, as well as legacy bequests have all helped extend an Epsom College education to others. We cannot express in words just how much your support positively impacts these pupils.

All such donations are truly life-changing and none more so than to our Springboard pupils who join us in the Sixth Form. Springboard pupils are fully funded, they come from challenging backgrounds and are exceptionally gifted. We are so grateful to all those who are already helping make such a difference to these students’ lives.

Collectively, we aim to help fund many more deserving bursary pupils: changing their lives; giving them the best platform for their futures; extending a life-changing Epsom College education to these young minds.

If you can support our Bursary appeal in any way, we would very much like to hear from you. To find out more please contact Ms Helen Tranter, Director of Development: helen.tranter@epsomcollege.org.uk / 01372 821290.

Maxwell Phair Bursary Fund

“I would urge OEs to support this fund – it is a memorial to a great teacher and to his fellow masters at Epsom. Crucially, this fund is all about maintaining the position of Epsom College as a charity.”

Dr Robert Ribeiro (Granville, 1955-60)

The Development Department actively seeks support for the Maxwell Phair Fund, established in memory of this distinguished master who taught at Epsom College from 1939 to 1969.

The aim is to create a £500,000 endowment, which will generate enough annual income to create a full bursary every year, in perpetuity.

Neil Laing Bursary Fund

“He was far and away the best teacher I ever had, certainly the most admirable. He believed in me when (in my angry adolescence) it seemed nobody else cared at all. Neil made literature seem muscular and powerful rather than weedy; as you know, such things matter to a 16-year-old.”

Jeremy Vine (Holman 1978-82)

Neil Laing taught English at the College from 1974 to 2006 and as Housemaster of Robinson from 1981 to 1996. You can read more about Neil here.

The long-term aim of the fund is to raise a capital sum of £500,000 which would generate enough income to provide a full bursary in perpetuity.

Bursaries really do change lives, enabling talented students whose parents could not afford the fees the opportunity to study at Epsom.

General Bursary Fund

“Looking back, my five years at Epsom College played an extremely powerful developmental role in my life. I am extremely grateful for the scholarship and bursarial support I received that helped me to attend Epsom College.

I would like to thank all those who have supported Epsom’s Bursary Fund, which has such a powerful impact on the lives of many Epsomians.”

Sandy Reid (Propert, 2002-07)

Trustees award funds to suitable candidates upon the recommendation of the Bursar. Typically, these awards are made for the duration of a pupil’s time at the College.

You can support future Epsomians by donating to the College’s general bursary fund, for more information please contact the Development office at development@epsomcollege.org.uk  or by calling 01372 821290
