Epsom CollegeCo-educational 13-18 Boarding and Day School

Rosebery House

Rosebery House was the College's first day house. Though day boys were admitted to Epsom College from its foundation, they were not given their own house until 1926, when Lord Rosebery, a former Prime Minister, agreed to allow the new day house to be named after him in honour of his long association with the College. Rosebery is situated in one corner of the College campus next to the John Piper Art School.

The current building was constructed in 1933 and the original corridors were external, with draughty doors opening to the outside. Today, it has changed beyond all recognition. In September 2008, Rosebery became a girls' day House.

Rosebery Housemistress and English teacher Katie Cloonan originally hails from New York, having studied at Swarthmore College (PA), Columbia University (NY) and then earning a PGCE at the University of Buckingham. Still playing violin, club hockey and English Premiership lacrosse, she also coaches hockey, lacrosse and rounders at Epsom as well as directing lacrosse camps for the English Lacrosse Association.

As a keen proponent of the liberal arts and all-round education, Katie aims to incorporate her multidisciplinary background in both her classroom teaching and approach to pastoral care. In Rosebery House, academic excellence is valued along with distinction in the arts, in musical endeavours, and on the pitch. Girls are encouraged not only to develop their own skills and talents, but also to share in the success of others. Girls have a sense of community, both within the House and in their wider world.

Katie and the dedicated tutor team help girls to gain confidence and independence by the time they leave Epsom to enter into the world beyond. Along with formal academic and co-curricular learning, girls develop qualities such as integrity, compassion, respect and responsibility as part of the House community.
