Sport Scholarships | Epsom College

We want you to bring your talent and ability to our College, and we welcome applications from potential Sports Scholars at all entry points: 11+, 13+ and 16+.

Sport is central to life at Epsom, and we have long been recognised for our sporting achievements. Already, this year, we have won national titles in shooting, hockey, rugby, squash, cricket and golf. And our alumni have represented their countries in the Olympics, Cricket World Cup finals and the Six Nations.

Benefits

Our Sports Scholars become part of our Talented and Gifted programme, accessing specialist coaching and 1-1 tuition, alongside personalised strength and conditioning work. Scholars will also access our links with many professional teams, and benefit from pathway programmes to elite-level competition.

Expectations

We want all our pupils to access sport, and to enjoy it, regardless of ability. We would expect Scholars to play a central role in ensuring this happens.

You will also be required to represent the College in your chosen sport on a regular basis – ideally across all three terms. You are expected to train and compete for your teams during periods of study leave, school holidays and after public exams. All the while embodying the qualities we hold dear: empathy, confidence, creativity, determination, self-discipline and excellence.

11+ and 13+ Scholarships

Potential Sports Scholars are assessed the school year before they are due to start at Epsom.

  • 11+ applicants are assessed in January of their Year 6. The assessments for September 2025 entry will take place on Tuesday 21 January (girls) and Wednesday 22 January (boys) 2025.
  • 13+ applicants are assessed in January of their Year 8. The 13+ Sport Scholarship Assessments will take place in March 2025, date to be confirmed. Scholarship application forms will be sent to all those holding a deferred place, in the Autumn of Year 8.

Physical & Motor Skills

First, we assess physical and motor skills. This takes place at Epsom. Candidates should bring suitable indoor trainers and their current school’s PE Kit.

Sport-Specific Assessment

Pupils are asked to choose two sports from the following list, indicating which they specialise in:

  • Athletics
  • Cricket
  • Golf
  • Squash
  • Swimming
  • Football (boys and girls)
  • Rugby (boys)
  • Hockey (girls)
  • Netball (girls)

We approach the child’s school for a reference and ask candidates to supply external references and testimonials with their application. We’re keen to hear about the child’s ability, coachability, potential, commitment and self-discipline.

We are not able to assess sports which are not listed above.

16+ Scholarships

Candidates should be playing at least at County or representative level to be considered for an award. When considering applications for Sports Awards for 16+ entry we focus on our main sports:

  • Rugby
  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Cricket
  • Athletics
  • Target Rifle Shooting
  • Squash
  • Golf

If your sport isn’t on the list above please don’t be put off. We do consider applications from candidates who demonstrate exceptional talent in other sports.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to attend a coaching session at Epsom, and we do try to observe a coaching session at their own club or academy. We may also seek references from your external coaches.
