Several members of the Epsom College Racing STEM team headed to Goodwood for the latest round of the Greenpower 2025 Championships. Epsom had two cars in the competition – EC Racer and EC Rider – which this season are being sponsored by Aspect Capital. Aspect Capital’s co-founder is Anthony Todd, an Old Epsomian who is passionate about science and STEM and who studied Physics at Oxford University.
The Greenpower event exists to “inspire young people around the world to excel in STEM through a unique challenge: to design, build and race an electric car”. Epsom has taken part in the competition for a number of years, with students testing, refining, rebuilding and ultimately racing the cars against other schools, universities and youth groups from around Europe.
Epsom entered two categories – Formula 24 (for competitors ages 11-16) and Formular 24+ (aged 16-25).
Race Day
The team arrived, set the cars up, completed scrutineering, and then headed out onto the track for a practice session. This allowed them to complete the set up and new gearing for both cars. Following a good practice run, it was time for the first F24 race. Dan, Harry, Aran raced EC Racer, while EC Rider was driven by Grace, Alex and George. Both cars started well and made good progress through the race. EC Racer completed a total distance of 26.04 miles and EC Rider completed 21.30 miles.
We then headed into Round 2 of the F24+ championship, we changed the gear ratios, and the cars took to the track. Harry drove EC Racer and Tom was in EC Rider. Both cars made good starts, but an intermittent electrical and mechanical fault saw EC Rider run slower than we hoped and finish well down the field.
EC Racer on the other hand was superb. Harry’s smooth driving saw him lap consistently well and he moved up to second in class midway through the race. Things were looking good, but we used a little too much power early on and our lap times started falling away. With one lap to go we were third but, unfortunately, we did not have the pace to maintain this position. Regardless, Epsom ended up finishing sixth in the F24+ category, our best result to date.
It was then time for the final F24 race. Grace, Alex and George took EC Racer out, while Dan, Harry, Aran drove EC Rider. EC Racer was in a superb position running 22nd in class (out of 45 cars), but unfortunately there was then a red flag with just over 20 minutes to go and the race ended.
As well as those driving, we have Jake and Max in the pits working hard to keep the cars on track. We now look forward to taking some of the Sixth Form to Mallory Park for the next round of the championships.
Thank you to Dr Telfer-Mason, Mr Chiba and Mick Day for taking the team to the race.
