Epsom Claims Second Place in U13 Hockey National Finals

A headline-grabbing season for our young hockey stars culminated in an outstanding performance at the UK Hockey Finals.

Epsom College U13 Hockey team are officially the second-best team in the country following an outstanding season of top class team performances.

They travelled to Nottingham to compete in the National Finals, arriving the evening before the tournament began. Despite some understandable nerves, the girls enjoyed a fun evening out for dinner before getting an early night. The next day would prove to be a long, challenging and full day of hockey against the top eight schools in the country.

Game 1 vs KES Southampton: Won 2-1

Epsom started strongly, scoring early to settle the nerves. Goals from Izzy (GH) and Orla (Hu) gave Epsom a 2-0 lead. Despite a late goal from the opposition, Epsom held on to secure a confident opening win.

Game 2 vs King’s Worcester: Drew 1-1

This was a step up in intensity. Epsom created several chances and took the lead through Tilly (GH). King’s responded with a goal of their own, and despite some outstanding goalkeeping and defending from both sides, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Game 3 vs Kirkham Grammar School: Won 5-0

Knowing they needed a win and plenty of goals to top the group, Epsom delivered a dominant performance. Led by Taylor (GH) and Izzy’s (GH) excellent distribution, and Orla’s (Hu) composure in midfield, the team played superb team hockey. Five goals followed, including one from Pippa (Wa), who was called up late after Elodie’s (Wa) injury. Elodie remained a fantastic supporter throughout the day. With results going their way, Epsom secured a place in the final.

Final vs Surbiton High: Lost 1-2

After a short rest and refuel, Epsom faced a familiar and formidable opponent. The standard of hockey was exceptional. Surbiton took a 2-0 lead, but Epsom fought back with determination. Senna (Je) made crucial saves to keep the game close, and Izzy (GH) scored from a short corner to bring it to 1-2. Elle (GH), Rosie (Hu), and Florence (GH) gave everything on the wings, working tirelessly in both attack and defence. Despite a strong finish, Epsom narrowly missed out.

Director of Hockey, Brett Garrard, said: “Runners-up in the country is an incredible result for the U13A team. Every player should be proud of their individual progress and how they have represented the College at the highest level. A brilliant end to a successful season, well done to all.”
