To complete their Duke of Edinburgh Awards, 98 determined participants took on the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Assessed Expedition across the stunning South Downs. Split into 16 groups and hiking for three days and camping for two nights, groups set off from either the dramatic cliffs of Beachy Head or the historic town of Lewes.
Following the South Downs Way, teams navigated rail crossings and road junctions with care and precision. The weather was glorious throughout – sunshine and warmth filled the days, prompting plenty of SPF, sunhats, and water breaks. Despite the heat and hayfever challenges, spirits remained high with a wonderful moment where each group crossed each other. Participants were so excited to see each other having been split between campsites they were boosted to push on with their 60km expedition.
Campsites were beautifully located – one overlooking the sea and the other nestled in the rolling hills. There was a huge range of entertainment to keep each other going. A particular highlight being the cheerful birthday chorus for one of the group, alongside impressive teamwork, and participants showing true grit, especially those battling blisters with admirable stoicism.
Assessment was carried out in partnership with Intense Adventure, who praised the students’ organisation and enthusiasm. One group even set a new record by departing camp at 07:06 on the final morning! Equipment was well cared for, and the groups demonstrated maturity and respect for their surroundings.
By the end, the hikers were sun-kissed, tired, and proud. The expedition not only tested their endurance but also highlighted their camaraderie and resilience.
A truly unforgettable experience in the South Downs.
