This summer term saw the return of one of the highlights of the Epsom College calendar: the Darbyshire Debating Competition.
The competition sees Houses compete in a series of head-to-head debates in a single-elimination tournament, debating over diverse topics – from entrepreneurship to CCTV, and the meaning of modern art to performance-enhancing drugs.
All the students approached the competition seriously, bringing passion and intellectual rigour to their debates. Ultimately, the competition came to a head with a Rosebery versus White final. The Houses battled over the motion: “This House believes that dating apps have made the world worse.”
Maddie and Alicia argued powerfully for White House in opposing the motion, but Sasha and Ananya secured the victory for Rosebery with their sharp research, excellent control of argument and persuasive style of speech, passing the motion.
Mr Campbell congratulated all students who took part, and thanked Mr Streeting and the Debating Society Co-Presidents Sophia and Giuseppe, for their help in organising and running the competition.
