White | Epsom College

White House was originally established in 1976 as a boarding and day house for Sixth Form girls – the year Epsom went co-ed. It was relocated a few years later to its present home at the northern end of the terrace of what were originally almshouses overlooking the College lawns.

White is now a day house for girls aged 13-18 (with boarding available in the Sixth Form) and welcomed its first cohort of Year 9 day girls in 2018. Faith Smith, the Housemistress, is also the College’s Senior Housemistress.

Faith Smith, Housemistress

I took over as Housemistress of White House in September 2015. I love the energy and buzz of the House and the way the girls support each other across the year groups. There is never a dull moment and the girls are such fun to be with!

I attended Bristol University where I completed a BSc in Mathematics and also studied for my PGCE. I am passionate about skiing and showjumping – in the past I have run showjumping and eventing teams, taking them to national success in the Schools Finals and at Hickstead.

My mum lives in France so I spend much of my free time in Normandy. In the UK, you can often find me at the gym or walking our house puppy, Millie.

Mafalda Simoes, Matron

I joined the team in White House in 2008; I became the Assistant Matron in 2018 and in 2020 while holding White House Assistant Matron post I was working as the Relief Matron in Fayrer House once a week.

White House has always been like a second home to me due to the Housemistress, the girls and staff having a warm and welcoming nature. I love the dynamics of the House, it has a fun and friendly family-like atmosphere.

I have one grown-up daughter and five Pomeranian’s. I love reading, music and walking my dogs in my spare time.

Maddie, Head of House 2025-26

My name is Maddie, and I joined Epsom College in 2019 into the Lower School, before moving into White House in 2021. I am delighted to be appointed as Head of White House for the coming 2025/26 year.

I’m studying Politics, Psychology and Religious Studies for A-Levels, complemented by an EPQ that I recently finished. With these A-Level, I’m aspiring to study Sociology at University.

In my time at the college, I have represented in Athletics, Netball, Hockey and Rugby sevens, and have further embedded myself in many of the outstanding experiences the college has to offer – Silver D of E, the service programme and debating competitions have all been highlights!

White House is unique as the only house in the school with a mixture of boarding and day and is filled with kind-hearted, friendly, confident girls who I’m honoured to represent this coming year. I can’t wait to start what will be an exciting and enriching year to help the girls succeed in all areas of college life!

House History

White House

White House at Epsom College was founded in 1976 when the school became co-educational in the Sixth Form, following Headmaster Mr Rowe’s proposal to admit girls. Sixteen girls joined that year and were housed in Longdown Cottage, renamed White House. Initially without a uniform, they made a strong impression, prompting the later introduction of standard attire in the 1980s. By 1980, White House moved to central campus buildings originally built for retired doctors, marking the success of co-education at the College.

In 2018, White House expanded to include girls aged 13–18, while continuing Sixth Form boarding. The pioneering girls helped pave the way for broader co-education at Epsom, leading to the admission of younger girls from 1996 and the eventual inclusion of Lower School students. From the start, White House girls were more than just present—they played a key role in shaping a new chapter in the school’s history.
