We welcome applications for Sports scholarships and exhibitions at all entry points into the College. Epsom has a strong reputation for sporting achievement, with many Old Epsomians representing their sport at County, National and International level.

Many of our alumni’s elite sportsmen and women started life as Epsom sports scholars.

Sport plays a key role at Epsom in providing opportunities for camaraderie, leadership and teamwork. It challenges pupils mentally and physically and gives each a chance to display empathy, confidence, creativity, determination, self-discipline and excellence.

Our sports scholars lead the way in all these qualities and values, and while inclusion and participation are the underlying principles of our games provision, our elite award-holders are assured of a competitive, nurturing and supporting environment that provides avenues for the advancement of their abilities and opportunities to test themselves individually and as part of a team.

Expectations of a Sports Scholarship-holder

You will be expected to be an outstanding ambassador for the College and demonstrate a willingness to contribute fully to the sporting, and wider, life of Epsom.

You will be required to represent the College in your chosen competitive sport on a regular basis – ideally in all three terms – and are expected to train and compete for your teams during periods of study leave and after public examinations.

Qualifying for a Sports Scholarship at 11+ or 13+

There are two parts to this assessment:

Part one: physical and motor skills assessment

Candidates should bring suitable indoor trainers and wear their current school’s PE kit.

Part two: Sport-specific assessment

Candidates should bring any equipment required to compete in their chosen sport, such as hockey sticks, rugby boots, cricket bats and so on. The assessment may take place outside so candidates should bring suitable warm clothing. Gum shields and shin pads will be required for any contact activity.

We will approach the child’s school for a reference, and we would expect you to provide references from external clubs outlining the candidate’s:

  • ability
  • coachability
  • potential
  • commitment
  • self-discipline

We will also consider applications from candidates who demonstrate exceptional talent in other sports, so please don’t be dissuaded.

Shortlisted applicants will be asked to attend an afternoon at Epsom, to undertake a coaching session. It’s possible that some candidates may also be observed at a coaching session at their own club or academy. We may also seek references from your external coaches.
