Hockey is the main sport for girls in the Michaelmas term. As with other sports offered at the College, the coaching provision for Hockey is peerless. The College’s long and successful history in the sport has been bolstered in recent years with the recruitment of first-class coaches.
Michael Johnson, the College’s Director of Sport and Head of Hockey, is a two time Olympian. He represented Great Britain at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.
Michael is supported, among others, by Games Specialist for Hockey David Beckett, a senior Great Britain and England International and current Surbiton XI player. Stuart Head, an Olympian at Sydney 2000 and Commonwealth Games competitor in 1998, is also part of the coaching team.
Coaching is also provided by teaching staff, several of whom have competed at a high level themselves. The College has a separate hockey goalkeeping coach, who trains the goalkeepers individually and with the teams.
Epsom has two artificial surface pitches, one of which is floodlit, an artificial warm-up pitch and indoor facilities.
The girls take part in, and regularly advance to, the final stages of county competitions in all age groups, with pupils in county and regional representation.
Excellence at all levels
Epsom competes on an extremely strong circuit of schools each Saturday, with the girls fielding up to 19 sides.
There are House competitions as part of the fabric of Epsom College life and plenty of co-curricular time set aside for those wishing to train outside of games lessons.
The College runs pre-season tours for U15, U16 and 1st XI teams, mostly to Europe, often visiting Holland and Germany, as well as around the UK, in order to prepare fully for the start of the season.
