A Celebration Of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

A year's worth of hard work from the EDI committee was recognised this week at an event celebrating cultures from across the world.

Main Hall came alive with warmth, colour and conversation as 28 pupils and staff gathered for the annual EDI Celebration Dinner – a way of thanking those who champion Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at Epsom College.

The theme of the evening was “Celebrating Cultures Across the World” – with a menu which reflected that spirit beautifully. Guests were treated to crisp and fragrant vegetable samosas from India, a bold and zesty chicken with chimichurri inspired by Argentina, and a West African-inspired ginger cake with pineapple and coconut cream. A meal designed to travel the world, no luggage required, with thanks to Mrs Bev Spencer, Director of Catering, and her brilliant catering team.

The evening opened with remarks from Ms Sash Naicker, Head of EDI, who thanked those working behind the scenes to drive inclusion across the College – from staff and colleagues leading change in their areas, to the HMMs who oversee EDI representatives in their Houses, and whose support plays a vital role in embedding EDI into day-to-day school life.

She also acknowledged the pupils, whose honesty and insight continue to shape Epsom’s inclusive culture, noting: “Epsom is ahead of the curve – not just in what we say, but in the way we act.”

As it turns out, diversity of thought pairs very well with dessert – and the conversation continued with reflections from Mr Nick Russell, Assistant Head: Sixth Form, who began Epsom’s EDI journey in the wake of the global reckoning following the murder of George Floyd in 2020. In a speech that was equal parts honest, encouraging, and challenging, he reminded us how far the College has come – and how far we still have to go. He spoke of the importance of imagination, energy, and vigilance in keeping this work alive, and paid tribute to those leading the way:

“You are seen. You are valued. What you are doing matters – and it will continue to matter.”

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of certificates to three Lower Sixth pupils – Chetachi, Mary and Charlotte – in recognition of their outstanding commitment to promoting EDI at Epsom. Through their leadership, empathy, and initiative, they have helped to drive real change: raising awareness, encouraging dialogue, and helping to build a school environment where everyone feels a genuine sense of belonging.

This dinner wasn’t just about food – it was a celebration of the quiet work, honest conversations, and shared values that are building a more inclusive Epsom, one thoughtful act (and one generous helping of chimichurri) at a time.
