A New Chapter for Heads of School

The appointment of Heads of School is changing. From the start of next year, the College will appoint two Heads of School each term – giving even more pupils a taste of reward, recognition and leadership.

Since 1944, one College prefect has been appointed each term to serve as Head of School – a position of great prestige and honour. The Head of School leads the prefect team, meets weekly with the Second Master and Head, and helps to bring about positive change at the College by representing the student body.

While this process hasn’t changed since 1944, the College has, and to reflect the increased size of the school and its diverse make up, from September 2025 the College will appoint two Heads of School each term. One will be appointed from a Girls’ House and one from a Boys’ House. Both will share the role equally, working together to support the prefect team and the wider student community.

This change reflects the growth of our College and the increasing importance of student leadership. With two Heads of School, we’ll be able to represent a broader range of voices and make sure that all students feel heard and supported.

We’re excited to see how this new approach will strengthen our community and give even more students the opportunity to shape the future of the College.

The last ever Head of School to undertake their duties alone is Amelie Penwarden, from Wilson House. Her appointment was announced at last term’s final roll, and she believes the new structure will prove a hit with pupils, and benefit the College.

“It is a really positive change, as it opens up more opportunities for students to take on leadership roles within the College,” Amelie says. “Having both a boy and a girl in the position also brings a broader range of perspectives, which I believe will be incredibly valuable in supporting Mr Lascelles and continuing to strengthen our school community.”

Introducing Amelie… the Head of School in her own words

“Hi, my name is Amelie and I’m incredibly honoured to be Head of School for the summer term. I’m so grateful for this opportunity and excited for everything the term has in store.

I joined Epsom last year in Lower Sixth, and these past two years have genuinely been the highlight of my school experience. I’m especially looking forward to working closely with Mr Lascelles to help create a positive, supportive atmosphere across the college—particularly during the busy exam season.

As a passionate (and very competitive!) sportswoman, I’m also really looking forward to Founder’s Day and competing in house rounders.

Beyond Epsom, I plan to take a gap year to travel and gain work experience in Asia before hopefully going on to study Economics at Warwick.

I’m so excited for the term ahead and feel truly lucky to have been given this incredible role and I can’t wait to make the most of it alongside you all.”
