Last night’s Inter-House Choral Competition, one of the longest-standing events in the College calendar, lived up to the pre-event excitement. With singing in every corner of the College in the weeks leading up the event, anticipation was high. A packed audience of parents, staff and friends of the College were delighted by a range of entertaining and polished performances as they saw the 13 Houses present a unison song, an unaccompanied part-song and a soloist.
The Choral Competition is a highlight Epsom’s calendar, forming strong bonds in the houses and bringing together the wider College community to celebrate the talent and commitment of our pupils.
Pupils and House staff chose and arranged their own songs, rehearsed hard, and conducted the evening’s performances wearing house ties, coloured ribbons and buttonholes, plus an array of entertaining props.
The Adjudicator was Mr Andy Rapps who is a Musical Director and keyboard player who has worked on West End Shows including Sister Act, Mamma Mia, Shrek, and Les Misérables.
Mr Rapps was particularly impressed with the commitment of all the singers on stage and the ambition and quality of the part-song arrangements, most of which were arranged by pupils. He also commended the extremely high standard of the soloists.
The Director of Music, Mr Paul Johnson-Hyde, celebrated the work of pupils and house staff in his closing remarks and also praised those pupils who showed grit and courage by accompanying their house on piano.
