CCF Army Platoon Navigates Headley Heath

Just before half term, the CCF Army Section Training Platoon ventured to Headley Heath to undertake their Basic Training Navigation Assessment

This year, the section is made up of Upper Fourth pupils from Epsom College and The Beacon (our CCF partners), supported by our Upper Sixth NCO leaders. The weather was kind, and an excellent afternoon was had by all, exploring the woodland.

The National Trust had kindly given us permission to run the exercise on Headley Heath again this year, after its successful pilot in 2023. Fifty pupils were released to self-navigate a 2km course independently and were all successful in returning to the coach on time, having achieved the necessary assessment objectives, albeit not necessarily in the order suggested!

With many lessons learned about team communication, paying attention to both written and verbal instructions, and negotiating landmarks and other clues for navigation, the group returned in good spirits – in particular Section 3 who emerged as the winning group for the time challenge.

Well done to all and many thanks to the supporting staff involved.
