Co-Curricular Diaries – British Sign Language Club

As a leading school for all-rounders, our pupils enjoy a huge array of clubs, societies and activities. This week we explore our British Sign Language (BSL) Club

Our British Sign Language club only started in September, but is already proving popular. It runs on a Tuesday afternoon for students in Year 9 and above. Year 9 pupils, Zoe Braine and Naomi Okonkwo, tell us more.

Q: What made you choose your activity and how long have you been doing it?

Zoe: My friends did it during Michaelmas Term and really enjoyed it, so I decided to join at the beginning of this term.

Naomi: I chose BSL because I wanted to learn a new language and be able to communicate with deaf people.

Q. What do you do each week?

Zoe: Every week we learn new word groups such as foods, colours, and animals.

Naomi: We recap what we have done so far and learn a new topic.

Q. What do you enjoy most about it?

Zoe: I enjoy learning sign language because it’s a fun and interesting activity.

Naomi: My favourite thing has been doing it with my friends and learning new ways to communicate with them.

Q. Why should someone choose to do British Sign Language as a club?

Naomi: People should choose BSL because it is a chance to learn a new language and enjoyable to learn with your friends.
