Co-Curricular Diaries – Dissection Club

As a leading school for all-rounders, our pupils enjoy a huge array of clubs, societies and activities. This week we explore our Dissection Club - led by Head of Biology, Ms Fonseka-McFarlane, with support from aspiring Sixth Form medics.

We caught up with Year 9 pupils, Vicky Trizcinska and Flora Huo, to learn more.

Q. What made you choose dissection club and how long have you been doing it?

Vicky – I chose this activity because I have been thinking about becoming a doctor and I thought it would be a good activity to expand my knowledge and have fun. I have been doing it since the start of year 9.

Flora – I chose this activity because I’m interested in medicine and I have been doing it since November.

Q. What do you do each week?

Vicky – Each week we learn new things. We usually dissect animals or organs from animals and we are guided through it, teaching me the structures. We usually complete a mini quiz at the start of each session.

Q. What do you enjoy most about it?

Vicky – I loved dissecting a heart as it was an interesting experience. I enjoy how we can look at different parts in the animal or organ by ourselves.

Flora – My favourite part of the Club is getting to know different parts of animals and physically seeing and touching them.

Q. Why should someone choose to do Dissection Club?

Vicky – I think if you want to learn more about structures of animals and are interested in dissecting organs, then you should do it as it’s a brilliant experience with plenty of Sixth Form students to help you. I would recommend it strongly to someone who would like to become a doctor.
