Double Award Win for Epsom Students at National School Theatre Awards

Glitz, glamour and accolades at prestigious school awards. Director of Drama, Lara Jakes reports.

The incredible standard of performing arts at Epsom College has gained national recognition, for the second year in a row, via two National School Theatre Awards. Ananya, Year 12, and Josh, Year 13, deservedly won national titles for Best Female Musical Solo and Best Male Musical Solo for their roles in Les Misérables, directed by Lara Jakes with Graeme Lodge.

Following in the footsteps of Brandon, Year 11, who won Best Male Musical Solo for The Addams Family  last year, Ananya and Josh were celebrated at the national awards ceremony in London’s West End this week.

Shakespeare in Love and Les Misérables were nominated for Best Play and Musical, while a total of nine students from Epsom College’s senior productions were nominated for individual awards.

Many of our nominees attended the awards ceremony, looking resplendent among the glitz and glamour of the red carpet at the Gillian Lynne Theatre, Drury Lane. The night was a celebration of school theatre across the UK, with awards handed out, and performances on the night from some of the nominated performers and productions.

Awards were presented by industry notables, including John Shelby himself (actor Joe Cole) and the caretaker of Hogwarts, Argus Filch (David Bradley).

Huge congratulations to Ananya and Josh, as well as to all cast and crew members of our nominated shows. We salute them for all they have done to represent and inspire the Epsom College community with such dedication and talent this year.

Josh is sadly missing from photos on the night as he was unable to attend the award ceremony due to illness. Instead, he picked up his award in front of a packed audience of parents, pupils and OEs at today’s Prize Giving.
