This term has seen some great theatre trips enjoyed by a range of pupils in the Drama Department. Dear England at the National Theatre was a real highlight as the recent story of the Men’s England Football team was told in a dynamic entertaining and moving manner against the backdrop of harmful gender expectations and racial discrimination. GCSE and A-level pupils gained a great deal from both the theatrical techniques and the exploration of themes.
Those in Year 9 who have selected to study drama at GCSE also had a great trip to see the musical revival of Oliver! at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End. The performances were inspiring for our pupils, notably as there were many cast members around the same age. The movement direction and theatre design were also particularly effective and will have fuelled many ideas for our future GCSE students.
Finally, a great day out was had by all with a celebratory theatre trip and dinner for the Sixth Form students following a very successful A-level performance exam. The production of North By Northwest at Alexandra Palace Theatre was the creation of Emma Rice and was filled with her iconic techniques of quirky music and dance, larger-than-life characters and bold use of set.
Overall, a great year of theatrical experiences for our students. We look forward to seeing the influences of these accomplished professional productions on their own creative work.
