Epsom Young Musician of the Year

The Music Department held the inaugural Epsom Young Musician of the Year competition. In place of the annual Inter-House Instrumental Competition, pupils were invited to submit recordings of their performances, most of which from their homes.

With a considerable number of pupils taking part, there were both vocal and instrumental classes within the Junior (Lower School), Middle (Middle Fourth to Fifth Form) and Senior (Sixth Form) categories.

The Director of Music, Mr Johnson-Hyde was delighted to invite Mr Robin Thompson-Clarke to adjudicate the instrumental classes. He studied cello at the Royal Academy of Music before embarking on a successful career as a soloist and chamber musician, performing across the world in prestigious venues. He continues to record and perform alongside his teaching at the Royal College of Music.

The vocal classes were adjudicated by Mrs Claire Moore. A graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, Claire has had an extensive career in the West-End performing as Christine in Phantom of the Opera, singing alongside Michael Ball, as well as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, and Mary in Jesus Christ Superstar. She was also vocal coach on TV shows such as the BBC’s I’d Do Anything.

The Adjudication and Winning Performances can be found in the film above.
