Epsom’s Lower Sixth Greenpower STEM racing team took part in the latest stage of the competition at Mallory Park. Following the strong performance at Goodwood a week earlier, hopes were high that the latest round of improvements made to the cars would boost the team’s performance even further. A change of gear ratios, tweaks to the electronics and a new motor cooling system had been added to the car.
Following a substantial breakfast, the team headed for Mallory. On arrival the team successfully completed scrutineering and the driver’s briefing. It was then time for practice, Harry took EC Racer out on track so we could complete the car’s setup ready for the F24+ race. Meanwhile Amber, Flo, Harry, Jake, Larissa, and Zoe got some time on track to learn the course in our second car, EC Rider.
Race 1 – Red Flags and Collisions
First up was the F24 Race 1. Flo, Harry and Tom shared the driving, but an early red flag following the collision on track with other teams suspended the race.
Returning to the track, Flo completed her laps, Harry then took over before Tom took the wheel. Unfortunately, an electrical fault seemed to slow Epsom’s car down and we only managed 18 laps, finishing 33rd.
Race 2 – Building on Goodwood
It was then time for the F24+ race, in which a single driver completes an hour’s driving to see who can cover the greatest distance.
The team were positive going into the race following their sixth place at Goodwood. Harry drove another fantastic race, his smooth driving style and consistent lap times saw the team progress well and – on the final lap – he managed to gain 10th overall and finish 4th in class. Our best finish to date.
Race 3 – Beating the Batteries
Finally, we had the second F24 race. Following lessons learned in the earlier race, we had updated the cooling system and electronics. Zoe took to the track first, starting well. Amber then took over with good consistent laps before handing over to Harry. He drove superbly and saw us gain places as other teams’ batteries ran out and their cars slowed. We finished 25th overall and 17th in class.
Thank you to Dr Telfer-Mason, Mr Chiba and Sue Green for taking the team away.
