Epsom’s Elite Athletes Celebrate Medal Success in Surrey Schools’ Championship

Epsom's athletes took on the exciting opportunity to represent the Central Surrey district at the Surrey Schools' Championship, bringing home a haul of medals.

Last weekend, athletes from Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 who qualified via the district championships on the 16 May, were invited to represent the Central Surrey district at the Surrey Schools’ Championship in Kingsmeadow. An exciting opportunity for our athletes to test themselves against the best in Surrey with 29 athletes selected from Epsom, making up a large part of the team.

Our pupils managed an impressive seven medals in total (three gold, two silver and two bronze) with the shot putters stealing the show, winning three out of the four gold medals available across the age groups. The victories came from Sam Judge who continues to go from strength to strength, Mimi Alalade-Blankson who improved on her own school record with a throw of 10.43m and Kit Fleming who added another county gold to his collection.

Another school record came from Francesca Weal with 43.29s over 300m, a gutsy run in a competitive field.

Gold

  • Sam Judge: Junior Boys – shot put
  • Mimi Alalade-Blankson: Junior Girls – shot put – 10.43m (new school record)
  • Kit Fleming: Intermediate Boys – shot put

Athletes who finished in the top two have gained qualification to represent the county and compete for the Surrey Schools’ team next week at the inter-counties meeting, taking place at the StoneX Stadium against Hampshire, Kent, Middlesex and Sussex.

Competitors here have the opportunity to gain qualifying standards for the prestigious English Schools’ Championships and take on the best across the country at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on the weekend of 12-13 July.

Meanwhile in the U20 and senior age groups, we had representatives – students and staff from Epsom College – competing at the South of England championships in Eton. Teyi Thomas in Lower Sixth managed silver in the U20 triple jump with a personal best of 13.34m, ranking him 16 in the UK U20 age category. Teyi also managed a fifth place finish in the U20 long jump with 6.15m.

George Johnson in Lower Sixth also achieved a silver in the U20 javelin with an effort of 53.81m, a performance which ranks George 12 in the UK U20 age category.

Amber Roberts in Upper Sixth received a bronze in the U20 discus with an effort of 25.36m, this ranks Amber 55 in the UK for U20.

Finally, Katie Mackison, one of our graduate students won gold in the senior javelin with an effort of 42.54m, Katie is ranked 20 in the UK with this distance.

Congratulations to all who participated, in both events.
