Granville and Forest HMM Appointments

The Headmaster is pleased to announce two strong internal appointments. Mr Chris Bates has been appointed as the new HMM of Granville House and Mr Jonny Bailey has been appointed as the new HMM of Forest House. Both will take up post in September 2021.

Mr Chris Bates

Mr Chris Bates is currently Head of the Biology Department, Captain in the CCF, i/c careers advice to potential medics, vets and dentists, coach of the 2nd XV and a Tutor in Holman House. He holds a BSc Hons in Biology with Education from the University of York, an MA in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of Bath, and a PGCE from Cambridge University.

Previously, Chris taught at Harrow School (2007-2012) and acted as an Assistant House Master; subsequently, he was appointed as the founding Senior House Master at Harrow International School, Hong Kong (2012-2014). Thereafter, he returned to the UK as Teacher of Biology and Higher Educational Medical Advisor at Sevenoaks School (2014-17).

Chris’s pastoral experience is extensive, rich and diverse: at Harrow School he helped to establish Lyons House, the first new house to be opened at the school in over a hundred years; at Harrow International School HK, he helped to launch the new school and was the first eponymous House Master of Bates House. While at Cambridge, Chris represented the 1st XV RUFC.

Mr Jonny Bailey

Mr Jonny Bailey is very familiar with pupils in Forest as he has acted as Deputy HMM in Forest House for five years.  He is a Teacher of Economics and he has acquired considerable whole school responsibility, currently, as Head of Fifth Form and, previously, as Head of Lower Sixth.

Mr Bailey is a former pupil of Lancing College, where he rose to the position of Head of School in his final year; he holds a BSc Hons in Economics from the University of Nottingham.  Jonny’s first career was as an Associate Chartered Accountant at Deloitte LLP (2008-2011) and, subsequently, he worked at Kaplan Financial (2011-2015).

Jonny is in every sense a genuine all-round schoolmaster, equally passionate about the life of the mind and all sports, particularly, football and cricket.
