Hockey: U14As Progress to South Finals

Epsom started the day with a hard opening game against Wellington and took the lead through an excellent passing move that was finished neatly by Yasi Fryer (Rv). Wellington came out in the second half fighting, winning a string of corners and were able to work one well to make it 1-1. Chances came for Epsom, however they could not score and the game finished 1-1.

The tough start set Epsom up for a dominant display against St Edward’s. The goals flowed, the pick of the bunch coming from a strong run down the right-hand side by Amy Henwood (Wh), who squared it to Fryer who was able to tap it in. The defence also showed their strength, stopping a number of counter-attacks to keep a clean sheet.

A draw was needed against Lord Wandsworth in the final game of the pool to progress to the cross-over match. The team showed they were able to keep the heads in what was a tense game. Leading the game 1-0 at half time through a short corner from Tabitha Evans (M), the team managed to create a number of good chances and also thwart Lord Wandsworth in the second. The game came to a close with Epsom winning narrowly 1-0 and progressing to the cross-over games.

After a short break Epsom played Latymer & Godolphin with the winner progressing to the South Finals.

Again, it was tense game. Epsom played with some real quality and created some very good chances, a number of these through short corners, but some top drawer saves from the Latymer & Godolphin goalkeeper kept them in the game.

The game looked like it was going to be a draw after Epsom could not break down the defence. However, late in the game, Ella Stephens (R) hit a fantastic shot to the back post which was deflected in by Georgie Jarvis Sobey (Cr). At 1-0 it looked like there could be more for Epsom, with India Gould (Rv) hitting the post, however the game was won 1-0 with Epsom progressing to the South Finals.
