Les Misérables Goes Live

It is with great pleasure that we release the recording of Les Misérables. Rehearsals for this performance began back in September and presented many challenges. Rehearsals were restricted to year group bubbles – meaning the whole cast never got together and no scene was ever rehearsed with everyone present. As a result, every aspect of the show had to be planned with military precision. Things became even more bizarre when we entered lockdown and rehearsals went online, with cast members joining us from around the world.

Sadly, as we returned to school it became clear that Covid-19 regulations made a fully-staged performance in front of a live audience impossible. However, the show must go on, and in order to present the results of the cast’s work, we decided to film a semi-staged concert version following all appropriate Covid-19 precautions. This was filmed over three evenings in April, preceded by a couple of days of rehearsal – the first time the cast had assembled together.

The cast deserves huge praise, not just for the quality of the performance, but also for the resilience and perseverance they have displayed throughout this challenging process. They have shown enormous commitment and determination, adapting to all necessary changes along the way. What a pleasure it has been working with them all.

We were only able to offer the chance of creating this performance because of the technical skills of the AV department, and in particular of Mark Bishop, who has edited the audio and video for the final film. It is entirely thanks to them that this film was possible.

Parents, pupils and staff have been emailed a link to the video and a password to access it. Sadly, due to licensing and copyright restrictions we are only permitted to share this recording with members of the Epsom College community.
