Broadcaster, playwright and former Epsom pupil, Jonathan Maitland, takes his latest play – Wilko: Love and Death and Rock ‘n’ Roll – to the West End in July.
The play tells the fascinating story of Wilko Johnson, founder of legendary rock band Dr Feelgood, and star of Game of Thrones in which is played the formidable Ser Ilyn Payne.
In January 2013, Johnson was diagnosed with late-stage pancreatic cancer and given “nine or ten months to live”. He ended up living almost another ten years, dying in November 2022 at the age of 75. At the time of his diagnosis, Johnson refused all treatment, deciding to spend his last months living meaningfully, visiting the people and places that meant most to him during his incredible life. Then the miracle of his decade-long survival happened.
Special guest stars from the worlds of rock ‘n’ roll, comedy and the media will play with the cast band at the finale of every show. Confirmed acts so far include Sir Bob Geldof, Billy Bragg, John Cooper Clarke and on July 19th at 3pm, much loved comedian and OE Tim Vine. And, on Weds 23rd at 7pm, Tim’s brother, presenter (and occasional drummer), OE Jeremy Vine.
