This year’s guest speaker was Tan Sri Dr Tony Fernandes, CBE (OE), one of Asia’s most recognisable entrepreneurs and a former student in Holman House (1977-1982). Tony presented prizes alongside this year’s Heads of School: Livvy (Michaelmas Term), John (Lent Term) and Amelie (Summer Term). To view the full list of prize winners, click here
The marquee was packed with parents and family members, who were treated to speeches from Alex Russell, Chair of Governors, Mark Lascelles, Head, and an inspirational talk from Tony himself.
Tony spoke fondly of his time at Epsom, from his arrival as a rather shy 13-year-old to the many great and long-lasting friendships he formed here. He urged pupils to seize every opportunity, and to be bold and resilient. He illustrated his points by recounting the time he left Virgin Records having been rejected, only to bump in Richard Branson on the way out of the building – a chance encounter that changed Tony’s life. He then told the audience that two days after buying Air Asia, the global airline industry was plunged into chaos following the tragic events of 9/11. Undaunted, Tony’s resilience and determination – qualities he ascribes to his time at Epsom – saw him through.
Following Tony’s speech, prizes were awarded to pupils from each year group, and the audience was entertained by outstanding performances from a variety of bands, featuring George, Freddy, George and Alex performing Naive by the Kooks; Ellie, Mr Wickham, Hattie and Dan performing Twentysomething by Jamie Cullen; and The Funk Band performing Luther Vandross’s Never Too Much.
We wish those who are leaving us the fondest farewell and very best of luck as they begin the next stage of their lives, and hope that you remain part of the Epsom community for many years to come.
