Sport Round Up – 24 March

Our Squash players finished the National Finals week in Nottingham with winners’ trophies in three competitions (U18 Boys, U18 Girls and U16 Boys) and were runners-up in two others (U16 Girls and U14 Girls). To claim three national titles and to come close in two others is an outstanding achievement by this young and talented squad.

The Netball 1st team performed superbly to defeat a strong Canford side 47-39 in the Independent Schools Competition National Plate Final to win another trophy in their fantastically successful season, before defeating St John’s 44-16 midweek.

They clearly inspired the younger girls, as the U14As returned from the Sisters N Sport National Finals in Birmingham with the National Plate Trophy after a 28-22 win over Bury Grammar. As always it was a squad effort, but Diana Peters (Year 9, Raven) was named player of the competition by the organisers.

All of our U14 teams performed well this week. The U14A and B teams won their respective competitions in the Charterhouse Tournament and the U14C team were runners up, narrowly missing out on goal difference, whilst the U14D and U14E teams had good wins against St Johns.

In Rugby 7s five Epsom boys’ and girls’ squads battled the rain and mud at the Rosslyn Park National 7s tournaments this week, all acquitting themselves well. Star performers were the U14s who won eight matches before defeating Dame Allan’s School 42-10 to claim the U14 Plate trophy, whilst the U16s were runners-up to Tonbridge in a desperately close Plate final. The U18 girls had a great day at Rosslyn, winning two of their four matches. On Sunday, the U15s reached the semi-finals of the John Pieroni competition.

The Hockey 1st team’s performance this week places them as the fourth-best side in the country. The girls performed well against a remarkable Repton side in the National Tier 1 U18 semi-final at the Lee Valley Olympic Park, and went on to claim fourth place overall, with a narrow 3-2 defeat to Dean Close in the playoff.

More potential success awaits, with the Football 1st team facing Dulwich in their London Independent Schools’ Cup semi-final on Saturday, while the U15As have their ISFA shield final against Chigwell on 20 April. Meanwhile, Epsom’s Golfers will travel to Hexham for the National Finals on 24 and 25 April.
