The Inter House Choral Competition 2022 – A Roaring Success

Following weeks of anticipation for the hotly-contested event and rehearsals filling the campus with song, yesterday’s annual Inter House Choral Competition lived up to the excitement.

The audience of parents, staff and fellow pupils enjoyed entertaining and polished performances from the 13 Houses, who each presented a Solo, an unaccompanied Part Song and a full House Unison performance.

The Unison entries were conducted by senior pupils and each House chose and arranged their own songs, rehearsed hard and came up with the choreography and sourced props for their performances.

Murrell took home the trophy as overall winners of this year’s competition. Upper Sixth Katie Evans also earned Murrell The Trott Cup with her solo Glitter And Be Gay from Candide

The Carson Cup and The Murray Young Cup were taken home by the girls of Wilson House for their Part Song ABC and Unison Don’t Stop Me Now performances.

The Choral Competition has always been a highlight of the year as one of the longest-standing events in the College calendar. Not only does it underline the strong tradition of singing at the College, it also forms strong bonds in the Houses and brings together the wider College community to celebrate the talent and dedication of our pupils.

This year’s adjudicator, Melissa Jacques, has had an extensive career in musical theatre with credits including being part of the original cast of Mamma Mia and performing in Wicked, Kinky Boots and most recently, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. Melissa provided detailed feedback to each of the Houses on their performances and she was particularly impressed with the confidence, talent and bravery shown by the soloists to perform in front of such a large audience, and the eccentric variety of costumes on display by the Sixth Form conductors for each performance.
