The Sad Loss of Former Headmaster Stephen Borthwick

It is with sadness that we report that 12th Headmaster of Epsom College, Mr Stephen Borthwick, died unexpectedly last night.

Stephen joined the College as Headmaster in 2000 having previously been the Head of Aldenham, Deputy Head at Bishop’s Stortford College and Head of Physics and Technology at Marlborough College. In his earlier career, he also taught at Rugby and Bloxham Schools.

Stephen was Headmaster at Epsom from 2000-12 and oversaw many positive changes at the College. In particular, he was a great advocate of co-education.

Stephen always saw a wider vision for the College, championing greater links with the state sector. Under his careful guidance and stewardship, the College formed a partnership with Lambeth Academy in the early days of the Academy movement. He was also a strong driving force in the opening of our sister school, Epsom College in Malaysia.

Stephen and his wife, Glynis, retired to the Wye Valley and they remained passionately interested in the development of the College.

The sympathies and condolences of the entire Epsom community are with Glynis at this sad time.
