Following Erin’s extraordinary A-level Art coursework last year, which earned her full marks (100%) for Component 1 of her personal investigation, she was thrilled to be asked to paint Sir Anthony’s portrait. Erin had a clear vision for the project and collaborated closely with Sir Anthony, who expressed a desire to include Paul Williams in the composition. Over the summer, she poured her efforts into the art work, producing a portrait that stands out for its sophistication and maturity. Her composition and execution exceeded all expectations.
Erin shares her inspiration behind Sir Anthony’s portrait
“As Head, Sir Anthony was a constant presence on campus, warmly engaging with pupils and staff and demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the College community.
To reflect this, I chose to depict him at the heart of the School, sitting on the steps outside the Humanities building. The background includes the Mermaid with wildflowers in the foreground. I feel this location symbolises the modern, progressive era of the College that Sir Anthony helped to shape, as well as the home of Humanities, where his research and writings have left an indelible mark.
With a friendly smile, I aimed to convey the warmth and approachability that defined his leadership. At Sir Anthony’s request, Mr Williams, the Second Master, stands in the background, his watchful and supportive presence underscoring their close collaboration. Together, they were a formidable team whose impact on the College was profound.
Sir Anthony set exceptionally high standards in all he did, achieving them with kindness and integrity. Although his tenure as Head was brief, his influence on the College was enduring.”
Sir Anthony’s portrait is a testament to Erin’s artistic skill and a fitting tribute to Sir Anthony’s legacy.
