Touching the Skies: Epsom College RAF Cadets Take Flight

Four of our CCF RAF cadets had the chance to fly a glider at RAF Kenley - Cpl Annabel English reports

Epsom’s RAF cadets were fortunate to have such clear skies to go gliding on Saturday. The day began very early, with cadets arriving at the RAF Kenley airfield at 8am. We attended a morning brief with the staff at Kenley, which gave us an insight into the everyday management of a real RAF airfield. Next, we prepared to go flying in glider planes through watching a video and running through safety precautions in case there was an issue whilst in air – which would involve jumping out of the plane and deploying a parachute.

The highlight of the day was when we got to go up in the glider. Cadets had the privilege to be seated at the front of the small aircraft, whilst an RAF pilot controlled the plane from the seat behind. The roof and sides of the glider were glass, providing an incredible view of London and the surrounding landscape, as the glider soared around 900m  from the ground. Whilst flying, the cadets had the opportunity to take videos and photos as well as look out for famous London landmarks, such as the Spire.

We had the opportunity to fly the engine-less plane ourselves after the pilot gave us a brief lesson on how to control the plane. The ride was breathtaking, however the launch of the plane was quite frightening as the glider was pulled almost vertically upwards using a winch, which detached from the plane after a certain altitude was reached.

Whilst on land, we were able to help launch the planes, as the RAF staff demonstrated how to attach the winch to the glider, as well as keep the wings level and run with the plane before it launched into the air. Overall, the experience was exhilarating, and I would highly recommend gliding to anyone.
