Hockey: U18s Progress in Tier 3 Bowl against Lingfield

The Senior U18 XI ventured to Lingfield School for the midweek Cup match in good spirits and it was clear from the outset that the opposition had some strong club players. After a few minutes, Epsom found themselves under attack from a talented side and – despite efforts in defence – went 0-1 down after a scrappy goalmouth tussle. This certainly rallied the troops and as both teams fought hard for possession it was Epsom who stepped up.

Creating a number of goalscoring opportunities, Epsom were rewarded with a penalty corner which captain Tassy Williams (R) despatched professionally into the bottom left hand corner to bring the scores level at half time.

The second half saw a much more composed Epsom performance, playing with more width and intensity. Ella Pilkington (Wh) and Elisabeth Phizackerley (Cr) added much to the midfield with their determined approach and it was Hannah Palmer (M) who stepped up to convert possession into a lead, finishing from close range.

As Epsom continued to attack down the wings, chances did present themselves and a superb team move saw Palmer unleash a terrific backhand across goal for Grace Crompton (R) to tap in and extend the lead to 3-1.

Lingfield were certainly not finished, though, and responded with a good passage of play that culminated in several penalty corners. Izzy Mitchell (R), who played well throughout, defended heroically and Izzy Evans (R) made multiple saves to keep the opposition out. However, the pressure eventually told and Lingfield’s standout player proficiently managed their penalty corner and scored to bring the home side back into the game; this made for a more edgy last five minutes.

Riding the waves of attack well, Epsom game-managed the last five minutes effectively, protecting their well-deserved lead, securing the win that saw the girls march on to the next round after Exeat.
